Did You Know?

	A report issued by development proponents at Clemson University in January 2002 details over 1900 acres of land slated for development1
	This land was acquired under the provisions of the Bankhead-Jones Farm Tenant Act Subsection (c), which states:

“…but any sale, exchange, or grant shall be made only to public authorities and agencies and only on the condition that the property is used for public purposes.”2

That the 2002 report viewed a “public participation approach” to the development a “potential pitfall”, because “nothing may be acceptable to the public as a development program.”3

That in 2004 the Urban Land Institute Advisory Panel refined these plans for a development that includes the following “public purposes”

• Commercial building unit with store, restaurant,fitness center and service retail4

• “Stonegate Village” an active adult community with 125 residential units5

• 25 to 35 cottages averaging 1,500 sq. feet each6

• 20 to 25 single family homes on the lakefront7

That the Keowee Chapter of the Society of American Foresters (a national, 17,000-member professional organization) has called the proposed plan:

“...a breach of public trust and would be illegal according to the laws under which Clemson University

acquired the property.”8
